OPEN STATEMENT FROM 'SC' JOURNAL:

Regarding the new statement from CPR International concerning the Oliver's Castle video.

Whatever the merits or otherwise of John Wabe's new claims, we would like to reiterate again that we have NEVER gone on record as saying the video is authentic and Colin Andrews is entirely wrong to insinuate - yet again - in his statement that we have.  We certainly do not "go on month after month" digging ourselves into anything.  In fact, the Oliver's Castle video has hardly been mentioned recently.  Individual members of SC, such as Michael Glickman, may have voiced an opinion on it, but this does NOT reflect any corporate view on behalf of SC.  We have sat on the fence all along, but have been a little more open-minded than some who were willing to write the whole thing off without any sensible evidence at the time.  We stand by this position as the right one to have taken and are not ashamed or embarrassed.

We trust the comments in CPR's statement will be amended to reflect our correct position on the Oliver's Castle video.  Such inaccurate reporting does CPR International no credit whatsoever.

After all the years of debate Colin Andrews finally has conclusive evidence that the highly controversial Oliver's Castle Video was created by this elusive character who has confess on film of his involvement.

Further observations on Oliver`s Castle  by Steve Page

What we are about to describe is the footage of the lights seen from Olivers Castle in connection with the Formation which appeared on the 11th of August 1996.

The video of the event was shot in the early hours of the morning by a young student, who was camping on the top of Olivers Castle on a rather damp and dreary time of the month.

An aerial shots by Steve Alexander. Copyright 1996.

The Video shows what the cameraman caught on his Video Camera after he was disturbed by unusual noises emanating from the field below. What was witnessed first were lights that were seen dancing around the field, but they disappeared and then reappeared a short time later.

The second time they appeared, is when the event in question was captured on film.

The witness pointed his Camcorder towards what was then an unmarked field of Wheat. As he zoomed in on the field in question in search of the lights he had seen previously, two balls of lights flew in above the crop, from the bottom right hand corner of the film as they changed direction and arced across the field.

The central circle of the formation started to form in a clockwise rotation as the lights flew over it, about 30ft approximately above the crop. As the main central circle appeared the inner satellite circles formed within a matter of half a second.

The flying balls of light at this stage were heading for the top hedgerow of the field as you witnessed the event on the screen. The lights were seen to fly through the first hedge and then possibly flew through the second hedgerow in the top field.

The formation at this stage was almost completely finished as the outer smaller satellites connected on the pathways were made simultaneously with the pathways themselves.

Once the first set of lights had departed from the area the second set of lights started to make their way across the top field. As they approached the hedgerow of the field they flew directly through it and accelerated across to the side of the formation and out of view diagonally off the screen. They returned horizontally across the formation changing direction, and swooped around the design. They departed finally to the right hand side of the screen above the formation. It seemed that the Configuration at this stage was completed.

The balls of light appeared to be between 3-4 feet in diameter, some were brighter and larger than others. The first pair followed the same flight paths, while the second pair separated for a short time from each other, then continued together again.

The estimated speed of the lights could have been 80 to 90 miles per hour, and the whole length of the Video Footage including the lights and the formation forming was approximately 17-18 seconds.

The whole event of the formation forming appeared to be simultaneous. What we have just described is a breakdown on the circumstances of the Video footage to our best abilities.

We will add a second report of the video footage by another person and "we hope" some stills of the video within a few days.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE OLIVER'S CASTLE VIDEO

DESCRIPTION OF THE VIDEO

The following is based upon a number of repeated viewings of the video on a large screen colour TV over two evenings, both at normal speed and frame-by-frame. The tape used was an unedited VHS copy of the 8mm camcorder original.

The video is clearly identifiable as being shot from part way up the slope of the Oliver's Castle hill fort. The light activity and crop formation occur in a field adjacent to the bottom of the hill, almost directly beneath the camera position. Picture quality is somewhat grainy, low contrast, and looks consistent with what would be produced by a relatively unsophisticated camcorder operating in dim lighting conditions. Colour rendition is poor and the image has a noticeable blue/magenta colour cast. However the quality is good enough for the appearance of the formation, the accompanying lights and the surrounding landmarks to be clearly visible.

At the beginning of the tape, prior to the main footage there is a short 2-3 second shot showing a fast zoom out from the field where the formation will subsequently appear. At this point the field is empty and there are no lights visible. At the bottom of the frame, tall grass on the hillside directly in front of the camera can be seen waving about in the wind. In this and the following footage constant slight shaking of the picture is evident

The tape then cuts directly to the footage showing the appearance of the crop formation. In total this is just over 18 seconds in length. The shot starts with the camera zoomed closer into the field, with the area where the formation will appear filling the width of the screen. This camera position and zoom setting remains constant throughout the whole shot. Colour and lighting levels appear identical with the previous shot. The waving heads of the grass in the foreground can still be seen at the bottom of the frame. This, along with the camera shake, would appear to substantiate that this is real time footage.

At the start of this shot two white lights are visible in the lower right quadrant of the screen travelling from right to left. Simultaneously a third light rises from behind a line of trees on the other side of the next field back. At this point the main field is still empty apart from a barely discernible dark marking positioned approximately in what will be the centre of the formation. The first two lights perform a clockwise loop in line astern around the perimeter of the formation, and as they do so the central circle starts to appear, followed by the six large surrounding circles. The circles appear to expand radically from the centre - there is no discernible rotational motion. The central circle takes longer to appear than the surrounding ones, so that they all reach their final size approximately simultaneously. The connecting pathways then extend outwards from the central circle to the satellites. At this point the voice of the cameraman can be heard on the soundtrack exclaiming 'Oh, that's amazing."

While this is going on, the third light flies to the left behind a tree, dips down through a hedge, and then flies diagonally across the next field towards the formation. At this point it is much fainter than the first two lights. As it approaches the hedge separating the two fields, the first two lights, which by now are in the top right quarter of the screen, perform a sudden 90 degree left turn, appear to pass through the hedge and head back towards the line of trees where the third light appeared, eventually disappearing across the top of the screen.

The third light now pops up from behind the hedge and flies above the formation towards the right side of the field. It is now much brighter and as it passes over the formation a second, much fainter light splits off from it and follows closely behind. Both lights accelerate markedly as they near the edge of the screen. As this happens the smaller satellite circles appear around the edge of the formation.

The third and fourth lights slow down and perform a U-turn which takes them momentarily off the right-hand edge of the screen. They return travelling right to left, the fourth light now almost as bright as the third. After performing a clockwise circuit of the formation, they shoot straight off the right side of the screen. After another second or two the camera stops recording.

The tape then cuts to a brief close-up of the centre of the formation, which is much darker than the preceding footage, probably due to the limitations of the camera. This shot demonstrates that the camera was not at its maximum zoom setting during the previous sequence.

The final shot viewed starts with a wide view of the hills to the right of Oliver's Castle. The camera then pans left back to the formation, ending in a view roughly the same as the first one on the tape, only now with the formation in place.

This was all the footage that was viewed. I am not aware of whether there was anything else after this on the tape.

POINTS IN FAVOUR

- The fact that the image is constantly moving around due to camera shake would make it extremely difficult to superimpose both the appearance of the formation and the lights onto the image while keeping them all convincingly in synch with the position of the background

- The moving grass in the foreground substantiates that this is real time footage, not something pasted onto a still picture

- The lighting conditions in the 'before' and 'after' shots of the field are very similar, suggesting that the time interval between them is quite short.

- The video is reported to have been shown in the Barge Inn on the evening of the day it was filmed, leaving little time to produce a sophisticated fake if it was based on actual film of the formation.

POINTS AGAINST

- The cameraman seemingly 'knew' exactly which part of the field to point the camera at and the correct zoom setting to use in order to get a full-frame shot of the crop formation appearing

- Apart from the camera shake, the camera does not move for the whole of the sequence

- At no time does he make any attempt to follow the movement of the lights, or zoom in on them, even when they disappear off the edge of the screen

- He stops filming when the last two lights fly out of the frame, rather than attempting to see where they are going

- The circles in the formation have a pronounced dark line of standing crop visible around the edge. However when watching them appear in slow motion it is apparent that this does not appear until after the rest of the circle.

- The time taken to form the connecting pathways is not constant, but appears to vary according to the amount of foreshortening.

- The formation of the central circle appears suspiciously jerky

- There is no discernible motion blurring of the lights when freeze framed, even when moving at high speed.

- The cameraman's voice sounds remarkably calm when he speaks as the circle is appearing, and his comment is surprisingly free of four-letter words

- There is an odd lack of wind noise on the soundtrack during the part where the cameraman speaks

No doubt some of these points can be answered by interviewing the cameraman, and others by proper analysis of the video itself. Until then it is anybody's guess as to whether we have here the most important and astonishing piece of paranormal film footage ever, or an extremely impressive and sophisticated hoax.

LIGHTS FORMING CROP CIRCLE at OLIVER`S CASTLE.

Video`d on the morning of August 11th, 1996 by anonymous amateur cameraman.

The shot begins with two balls of light at A flying in a clockwise direction over the field, as if one were chasing the other. After a few seconds, when the balls are roughly at position B the central circle of the formation starts to appear, growing larger and more distinct over about two seconds.

Meanwhile, the larger outlying circles start to pop up over 3 or 4 seconds. The first pair of light balls makes a left turn at C and fly through the hedge on their way off. At the same time another smaller ball of light becomes visible at D, and flying through the hedge also, it gives birth to another, even smaller light at E, and these two fly around close together like the first two.

During this second stage, the smaller outlying circles appear, and the straight lines form last. Finally, the smallest light fades away as the pair fly to the right, and its partner exits frame right. The total action time is about 15 seconds, with the crop formation materialising in about five seconds.

The lights appear to be about 3 to 5 feet in diameter, with a fuzzy outline. They are white, but not bright enough to illuminate the crop in the overcast morning (purple) light. Compared to the videos shot by Steve Alexander and Von Durkheim brothers, these lights are larger and flying much faster.

Oddly, he makes no attempt to follow the lights on the occasions when they go off screen, but stays centred and zoomed in on the crop formation - even before it appears.

Dr Eltjo Haselhoff (The Netherlands)
comments on the Video.

Here are my comments on the 'points in favour'.

The fact that the image is constantly moving around due to camera shake would make it extremely difficult to superimpose both the appearance of the formation and the lights onto the image while keeping them all convincingly in synch with the position of the background.

- Comment: I don't think so. You film the crop circle with a tripod (stable image). With a good video board in a PC you manipulate contrast etc. (or do some cut/paste actions) so as to make it look as if the pattern magically appears. Then a hand-crafted animation of flying lights is merged with the original (manipulated) video. The animation part is something you could do before. Finally, the hand motion is simulated by computer (slightly reduce the field of view, and have the frame jump around). Even simpler perhaps: indicate a fixed point on every n-th frame of the video, so as to 'sample' the camera shake and then translate the animated lights along with it (by interpolation). This is a video-routine that you can program before, so that it is performed semi-automatically with any piece of film.

The moving grass in the foreground substantiates that this is real time footage, not something pasted onto a still picture

Comment: OK, but it does not contradict my previous statement.

The lighting conditions in the 'before' and 'after' shots of the field are very similar, suggesting that the time interval between them is quite short.

Comment: like before.

The video is reported to have been shown in the Barge Inn on the evening of the day it was filmed, leaving little time to produce a sophisticated fake if it was based on actual film of the formation.

Comment: Actually, it surprises me that he waited so long before showing the video to somebody. Apparently, he had the entire day to manipulate the video (the animated light balls etc. had already been made).

Today you can buy relatively cheap video boards for your PC with very advanced functionality. If you practice this hoax a few times, I believe you can reproduce it in less than a day with an arbitrary video of a crop circle. Like I said, all you need to do is manipulate a few seconds of video showing the crop formation (perhaps even this can be done automatically). The fact that the lights do not show motion blur is VERY strange ad STRONGLY indicate that in fact, the lights are computer animations.

CONCLUSION

I agree with all 'points against'. Unfortunately, there are no 'points in favour' left, as far as I'm concerned. I think this is the first time I am really sceptical about a crop circle witness. Please don't take this wrong - like I said, I did not see the video, so in fact I don't know what I'm talking about. Actually, I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.

Dr Eltjo Haselhoff.

OLIVER'S CASTLE FIELD REPORT, 10-9-96

Having viewed the video the previous weekend, we visited Oliver's Castle on 10th September to try to identify the point from which it had been filmed and take some comparative photos. There was no trace remaining of the formation itself as the field in question had already been harvested and ploughed. However, the surrounding hedges, trees and nearby telegraph pole visible in the video were easily identifiable. By comparison with the still photos from the video, it was possible to determine that the camera position was in the vicinity of the footpath around the top of the hill, on the north side of the hill fort (see map and photo 1).

Photo 2 shows the view from this point using a wide-angle lens, with the area of view covered by the video shown by the red rectangle. Note that the view off to the left is obscured by the hillside, making this a relatively poor spot for crop watching (unless you know where the formation is going to appear...). The long grass in the foreground is similar to that visible in the video. To get the grass in shot the camera would have had to have been no more than 3-4ft off the ground.

Photo 3 shows the same view as that of the video. Using a 35mm camera, a 200mm lens was required for this, equivalent to 4x magnification over a standard lens. This is well within the range of a standard camcorder which would normally have an 8x or 10x zoom lens. The positioning of objects in this photo correlates well with the video still. This substantiates that the video is at least based on real footage.
