Oliver`s Castle Snowflake. August 11th below the hill fort known as Oliver`s Castle, 390 ft, in wheat. The field is just to the west from the one with the crescents in 1994. A video showing several luminosites apparently inspecting the formation was shot by a student camped on the hill on the first morning. The six-fold-symmetry design is an extension of the beauty at Etchilhampton in 1993. Diagram by Peter. S. Sorensen. Copyright 1996. The formation is located below the Ancient Hillfort of Oliver`s Castle. The formation consists of 19 circles. The central circle was spiralling clockwise with no standing crop centre. But the other smaller circles on the arms each contained standing centres. The diameter is 390 feet, this measurement is approximated and will be verified soon. We spoke to two locals walking their dog on the castle, who said it had rain all night when apparently this formation was created.?! More details will follow. A full report will follow by mid-week, with aerial and ground shot by mid to late week, we hope. :-) Field Report by Stuart Dike.Oliver s Castle is one of the most enigmatic ancient hill forts in the country. Famous for the Mary line that runs through its spine, the fort juts out from the surrounding bank of hills separately itself from the crest. The formation is situated below the hill's ramparts and was a very surprising. It resembles the pattern of a snowflake , or a gallon's ship wheel. It comprises 19 circles in total and six arms with three circles, in diminishing sizes on each. The central circle was clockwise in rotation, with a splayed centre and two underlying pathways flowing in opposite directions starting from the centre. The pathways run into two of the arms on the central axis. Each arm flowed out from the central circle into the first circles attached to them. These circles all had standing tuft centres, with clockwise rotations. The smaller circles at the end of each arm were more sways than circles, again flowing in a clockwise pattern. As the pathway ran into each of the smaller circles the crop forked into the standing crop walls, in bunches overlapping each bunch. Quite exquisite in form much like the whole formation. The overall floor pattern was extremely neat, an underlying pathway ran through each of the arm circles, flowing passed the standing tuft centres. The wheat was very ripe, which can produce messy constructional forms, but the crop was very gently flattered, especially in the central circle, with the layering over the underlying pathways. A very impressive formation, within an expanse of countryside as you view it from the Ancient hill of Oliver`s Castle. IMPORTANT
