Field Report on the Hexagram

It  consists of a large ring with three circles on it. A part of the   crop in the circles is still standing. Together with three chevrons within the ring the whole gives the impression that two triangles  overlap each other forming a Star of David.

The second crop circle of the Belgian crop circle season was   discovered on July 22th in Huise, a small village near Oudenaarde in  the Flemish Ardennes. The circlemakers have chosen a field next to a  street called ŒLeystraat¹ (Ley-street), a very remarkable choice  indeed. The formation itself is - according to continental standards  - very remarkable as well. The pictogram represents a hexagram   within a ring. The corners of one of the triangles of the hexagram  each time mark the centre of a circle. Thus apart from a ring and  two triangles, the pictogram also contains three circles. The  circles have a diameter of (approximately) 26,8 meters. Calculations  suggest a maximal width of about 75 meters.

The hexagram is meticulously positioned between the tramlines, which  seem to have been heavily relied upon for the construction of the  pictogram. The distance between two tramlines ( 16 meters) seems to  be the basis for the geometry of the whole complex as this distance  is the length of one Œleg¹ of the corner of one of the triangles.  The circlemakers created (the impression of) this triangle by making   six avenues in the corn exactly on the spot where the Œlegs¹ of the   three corners of this triangle are supposed to be. The impression of  the second triangle (which seems to overlap the first one) is  created by crop still standing in the three circles. This second triangle is in fact suggested by relying on optical illusion. As a  matter of fact the whole pictogram is a masterpiece of trompe   l¹oeil.

UPDATE

The Hexagram - or Dreamtriangle - which was discovered last week in   Huise, is placed within a ring with a diameter of 75 meters. The  ring itself has a width of 2 meters. The two triangles of the  hexagram each have sides of 65 meters. The V-shaped chevrons which  form the corners of one of the triangles are 2 meters wide as well.  The overlapping triangle is created by optical illusion, hence its  name Dreamtriangle. The ring as well as the circles are swirled  clockwise. The geometry of the formation, which was created in a  gently sloping field, is very accurate. The maximal width of the  formation is 91,2 meters.

The formation was discovered by a balloonist on July 22th, a few  hours after it was finished... Indeed: the Hexagram is a hoax and  was exposed as such by the Flemish national broadcasting system VRT  on Sunday evening.

But...the hoax was organised by the VRT - Flemish Radio and  Television - itself with the permission of the farmer. The Dreamtriangle was ordered by the producers of De Droomfabriek - The  Dreamfactory - to make the dream come true of a young woman. She had  written to the producers of the program telling them it was her  dream to see a Crop circle being made by humans.

The pictogram itself was made by a group of Dutch hoaxers, the  same ones who made the Julia-set in Nieuwerkerk (The Netherlands) in  1997. The formation was created during the night on Monday 20th  and Tuesday 21st of July (the Belgian national holiday). During the  first night the hoaxers indicated the main points of the pictogram.  During the second night the corn was flattened. It was apparently a   coincidence that the Dreamtriangle was created in a field next to a  street called Leystraat - Leystreet.

According to the VRT the hoaxers were filmed during their nocturnal  activities. The program about the creation of the Dreamtriangle  will probably be broadcasted in December. For the moment the  producers of the program refuse to give any details about how the  pictogram was made or about who the hoaxers might be. The Dutch   press however exposed them on Monday.

A DISCOVERY

Paul Vigay discovered that it appears that the exact shape  is actually contained within a 1975 painting by A.J.W.M. Thomassen. Is this evidence that it is a hoax? Was this the inspiration behind the formation if it was? Here click to see
