Crop circles appear in Bedford cornfield Flattened crop makes for an odd sight

A rare and “pretty” sight was on display for people gathered in a Bedford cornfield last night, said Bedford Police Department dispatcher Mark Duncan.

“It’s the weirdest looking thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said of about a dozen crop circles and other, stranger shapes created by flattened corn. About two acres of 8-foot high corn — hundreds of dollars’ worth — are flattened to the ground “as tight as can be,” with curved ends that make the circles resemble bowls, Duncan said.

“I don’t think it was a person who did this,” he said. The largest circle is at least the length of a football field, he added.

The first call about the strange crop circles, or weather circles as Duncan called them, came in to dispatch Friday afternoon. He believes the crop shapes are weather-related and hopes to call in someone from the weather service to see the cornfield, which is on Sandpit Road just off Mitchell Road. The area got rain, he said, but not severe weather.

“We’ve had lots of traffic problems,” Duncan said about 9 p.m. Friday, with all the curious people stopping to see the flattened corn, which is on a privately owned farm.

We were aware of this field about a week ago and have been in touch with the local news media and police.  This is actually the 2nd field in the mid-west that we've looked at recently with large areas of more or less randomly-downed crop--this time it's "sudangrass," not maize.  We only have one photo right now, taken by Pete Schreiner of the Bedford Times-Mail.  A local policeman has taken a number of others, which are being sent to us on a disc. Large, randomly-downed areas of flattened sudangrass in Bedford, Indiana, found September 12, 2008:

Although the farmer in this case attributes the downed crop to weather damage, weather reports covering the night prior to the discovery do not indicate either intense rain or high winds.  This was also the case in the very strangely-downed maize field BLT investigated a few weeks ago in Missouri.  We are hearing the term "microburst" mentioned in regards to both of these situations; whether this is really what happened is not yet clear.

Just heard about another formation near Duncan. Three small circles with connecting pathways in grass (?). All circles small, clockwise. A "knot" in centre of one of them. May be a couple weeks old or so.

The woman who reported it is Elsa Morrison. She's seen it and had a camera at the time, but didn't think it would be helpful to take ground photos (??), so seeing if someone else has or can take some.  On Keating Farm on Miller Road.

My dad, Ken Stokley, returned home to his ranch in the East Mountains of New Mexico (due east of Albuquerque, near Tijeras), after visiting relatives in Michgan.  Inside his horse arena he found 5 circles inside the corral that resembled crop circles, except they were in the dirt.  This happened between Friday July 11 2008 & Sunday July 13th.  Dad searched the area outside the arena and saw no tracks going in nor out of the arena.  Later he drove his tractor inside the arena and examined and took photos of the circles, which are approximately 20 feet in diameter.  His neighbour contacted a local newspaper, the Edgewood Independent. They cam out and took photos from the top of the fence. When this story broke, a news helicopter came out and took photos after everyone had tracked all through the arena, to include neighbours, etc.  They interviewed Dad on the phone and he told them that he had driven his tractor around, but they neglected to include that info in the following broadcast: HERE

Here's an update regarding the circle reported near the end of June near Greenville, Illinois.  There was in fact a peculiar-looking imprint in a wheat field near Greenville (see aerial photo from the local newspaper) and BLT fieldworker JoAnne Scarpellini did in fact drive to Greenville in an attempt to clarify this event's origins.  Both from my phone conversations with the field owner's daughter-in-law and from JoAnne's investigation on the ground we are pretty certain that local 16-year-old boys got inspired one night and, using a hockey stick, flattened these rings into the field.

The daughter-in-law did supply a number of ground photos, but none close enough to the actual flattened plants for us to make any statements about the effects on them--and the field had been cut by the time JoAnne got to the area.

I think we can safely assume, in this case, that kids (rather than something a bit more interesting) were responsible.

This circle was reported by Karin van Beekveld during a short flight. The circle is not discovered yet but we think it is a commercial for the Q-dance festival.
