A Great Work in Progress!

Hackpen Hill (2), nr Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, reported 11th August

Following the very secluded small formation of Hackpen Hill on July 30, this new one, with its unusual style of the centre design made of flattened crop on flattened crop, presents us with a work in progress so to speak. Without the central whorled circle and the smaller surrounding whorls, and the orbital circle with the planet on it, we recognize the familiar symbol of two overlapping equilateral triangles creating the Star of David. With the extra elements, this crop circle takes on more of the alchemical meaning of the hexagram, sometimes called the Seal of Solomon.

The hexagram represents the synthesis of all four elements (fire, water, earth and air), the marriage of Heaven and Earth, the union of opposites.

Alchemical symbols for all the elements are contained in the hexagram.

Because of its harmonic geometry, the hexagram came to be used as a symbol for the relationship of macrocosm to microcosm, the heavenly and earthly realms.

A recent use of the hexagram with the six orbs involved in the Great Work on Earth and an ancient alchemical illustration of the same transforming process

In alchemical illustration the hexagram is often surrounded by the Ourobouros, representing the chaotic matter to be transformed.

The Ourobouros, representing Prima Materia, chaotic matter to be transformed, surrounds the symbol for the Great Transformative Work.

At times the sun is represented pictorially in the centre while often symbols for six other ‘planets’: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, (Sun in centre) Venus, Mercury and the Moon are seen at the six apexes of the hexagram.

In the case of the Hackpen Hill crop circle, small whorls appear between each apex, and instead of an Ourobouros, we see a ring with a small circle sitting on it, which suggests a planet orbiting around the hexagram design.

The reason for only six ‘planets’ in the diagrams for the Great Work is that according to the Greeks, the soul came from and returned to the stars. Guided by Mercury, the soul travelled through Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon. (dcsymbols) Earth is not represented because Earth and earthly existence are the agents and endurers of this process.

“The Great Work, or Opus Magnum, is the term used by alchemists to describe the conscious effort to achieve the highest state of purity. The term is applied both to the Outer Work, the perfection of the Philosopher’s Stone, and to the Inner Work, the achievement of divine consciousness. The Great Work also refers to Creation itself” (Melville  63)

The hexagram with the central dot is also a sign meaning ‘boil’ according to an old German treatise, since it is the combination of the sign for water (inverted triangle) and fire (upright triangle) with the central point being the symbol for the sun or heat. (Liungman 339) In alchemical texts we almost always see the use of fire in order to bring about changes.

So perhaps the essence of this message is that our Earth, in its orbit (the ‘ourobouros’) in relationship to the Sun, is being affected by more than usual heat. The smaller whorls could be seen as flares emanating from the Sun and causing turbulence as solar winds. This is all part of the Great Work, the transformation, purification that is taking place as the New Earth and our new understandings develop.

What is interesting is that this formation suggests something ‘hidden’ is coming to light, and in one of the illustrations I found during my search we have the words that describe this phenomenon:

“Occultum fiat manifestum et vice versa | Aqua cum igne tandem in gratiam redit”

[The hidden becomes manifest and vice versa | Water with the fiery glow of passion in the end returns to good influence (grace)].

The Great Work, as depicted in ancient times, shows us a dynamic transformational event that takes place WITHIN in spite of the fact that many elements are involved.

Just like housework, this work is never done! Once completed it must begin anew, as the small formation at Hackpen Hill of July 30th might suggest, since it is similar to an egg shape with a small beginning spark of life ready to incubate, gestate and grow. This wonderful process, this cosmic event is being revealed to us as we watch the fields! It is like health food for our brains/souls/hearts/lives!
