The White Substance Enigma

On 18 May 2011 we were just ending our 7 day Power Places Expedition at West Kennet Long Barrow, when Heather Clewett, my wife, shouts, ‘’What is that?’’ pointing at the ‘bent grass’, as Michael Glickman calls it, in the field east of the barrow.

Since we are on a Non Crop Circle Expedition, our dilemma’s begin. Do we change the rest of the group’s last day program to chase circles, or do we stick to the original itinerary? Do we take our group to the crop circle after we finish our last day itinerary? We decided to stay to the original itinerary and see if there was time to fit the crop circle into it along the way. However, we did call a few colleagues, like Mark at the Crop Circle Connector, so the information could begin to ripple through the croppies.

Later on that day, we took our group into this strange formation with its unique pattern in about two feet high young barley. It was clear earlier from West Kennett Long Barrow that there was some kind of spiral or very narrow rings in the downed crop, but once inside the circle, it was not obvious what the design was. For some very strange reason, none of us which was 18 people, stepped off the two tram lines that run through the middle of the crop circle. It did not feel right to do this. Several people said, they did not want to hurt the crop design. As a result of this, we did not investigate the rest of the circle. We only investigated the crop in between the tram lines and on either side of the lines. Also, we looked at the centre where the money box and sign from the farmer is, and took a few photos of our group members next to the sign.

After our group left the next morning on 19 May 2011, we decided to do some flying to make  overhead shots of the circle. When that was accomplished, we went back to the West Kennet crop circle to further our investigation into this unique pattern. We were the only two people in the formation and again it did not feel right to step off of the two tram lines that run down the middle. Therefore, we decided to concentrate on taking pole shots and looking more closely at the centre. And, there it was. A pure white lacy looking substance woven around the base of the few stalks that denoted the centre of the circle. We are both almost certain that this white powdery lacy looking substance was not there the day before, on 18 May 2011. Just after our discovery two colleagues arrived, Glenn and Cameron Broughton, and we showed them the substance. We looked at the adjacent tram lines to the circle to see if there was any white substance, and found nothing. It was only present on a few stalks of young barley in the centre of the West Kennet circle.

What is this white substance? An enigma, a natural occurrence, or an elaborate joke? Where did it come from? Is it something obvious like milk? Or, fake snow that you spray on Christmas trees? Or, fake spider webs that you spray on haunted houses for children at Halloween time? Can it be a real spider web or a caterpillar that made it? OR ????????

One thing is for sure, both Heather and I will be ‘haunted’ by What Is It for a long time.
