The arrival of this
event, set on high ground above the plains of the beautiful Oxfordshire
Countryside, and directly within the neighbouring field to the previous
event on the 12th of August, epitomized the length of the
2009 season. However there is also a certain satisfaction, in that a
natural cycle has been completed from the start of the season within Oil
Seed Rape, Barley during the month of June, and Wheat in the July and
August months. The Maize is the Curtain Closer crop to a season that
will certainly remain in the memory banks for many people for a long
time.
The Maize crop is
always a challenge to research and to tackle with regard to entering
these fields. The height of the crop still towers above the tallest
visitors to this elusive formation. There was an uneasiness of being
inside what is regarded as the largest formation to have appeared in
Maize in the UK. Luckily there is a natural path that led into the
formation itself. This we only realized after an initial discussion with
a visitor inside the formation.
The multitude of
pathways and hidden elements in this design also create a feeling of
disorientation, as many of the pathways look very similar to each other.
The features inside this formation certainly surpass the impressive
features we witnessed at the Avebury Avenue in 2008. One of the most
astonishing aspects to this design was what we have named ‘The Canopy’ a
set of plants that have arranged themselves in such a way to create a
roof of leaves as they bent into each other. This has never been seen
before within any crop formation, and has certainly pushed the
boundaries as to what the Circle makers can achieve.
My feelings within
this field were quite daunting to describe. It’s totally alien to any
type of experience you will have within the main crops of the summer
months. Julian Gibsone pointed out that it could be a movie set of a
horror film, and you certainly felt something could have jumped out at
you! We are very privileged to have this opportunity presented to us
within beautiful countryside on a wonderful summer’s evening.
