Handy Hint, if visiting the new formation at Barbury Castle, please note there is a dry ditch on the other side of the blue gate, so if a face full of nettles doesn't sound enticing, do not leap over in great anticipations:) Whilst The Phoenix at Yatesbury is definitely a formation to be appreciated from the ground and within, The Benu Bird at Barbury Castle, has an impact from the aerial shots. Points of interest include: This rather 'explosive' formation has The Barley laid multidirectional, especially in the wings, flowing up, down and across. At the base of each wing is a rough swirl. Many of the stems throughout have double chip marks on them, as in, a mark about 1” above ground level, and another identical mark, about 12” above the first. Where The ‘beak’ area joins onto a circle, there is an abrupt parting / joining on section. The flow of the crop is similar to that of Milk Hill (2), with the appearance if being created at high speed/energy.

Saturday evening had been a most unusual experience. I had been camped in the field next to the hill fort at Barbury Castle, hoping for a spectacular sunrise to photograph. Throughout the night, I saw about a dozen strange dull off-white glowing lights following the contour of surrounding hills, yet despite the breeze blowing toward me, the night was totally silent. The sunrise was very picturesque, however, this was not my only surprise. As I stood on the fort's edge, I became aware of a gigantic crop formation, which was most definitely not there when the sun had set the previous night.

It was about 8am when I entered the field of green barley, which stood about 3 feet tall. It was easy to find my way to the formation, having seen it from the hill fort, and using a large area of dead immature barley in the corner of the field as a reference. The formation itself is not visible from either the road, or the edge of the field due to it's position on the uneven surface of the field.

I was excited about this one, as I may well have been the first visitor since it's creation. Half an hour, and 45 minutes after I arrived, several other visitors turned up, but prior to their arrival, I could find no footprints other than my own anywhere within, or leading up to the formation. My first thought as I entered the formation was WOW!! It is huge, a lot bigger than it seemed from up on the hill. On the ground, most of the barley was laid at the base of the stem, with no obvious sign of other breakage, or scuff marks. There were patches within the formation, where the barley had begun standing up again. An interesting discovery I made, was that many leaves on the flattened plants had taken on a 'twisting' effect, which I was unable to find in standing plants outside the formation. The entire field is covered in bald and untidy patches, many are where the formation is located. This will give the edges an untidy look in places.

For me, this is a very special circle because first, I may well have been the first visitor :o) and second because it has a Aztec connection, in that it's appearance at this time would coincide with the ancient prophecy of the appearance of a celestial body (Nibiru) in our solar system in 2012, which may be visible approaching from late 2009.

This is an absolutely gorgeous formation, and I enjoyed every moment of being within it. I left after 2 hours inside it, when a helicopter arrived and hovered over the formation. When I zoomed in, I could see someone taking photographs, so I left to formation, to allow him (Steve Alexander?) to get a clean shot without anyone inside it.
