A formation @Horton nr Devizes, Wiltshire. Reported
6/8/00 (Barley) Just a very short walk from our home in the Wiltshire
village of Horton lies a beautiful little formation, that for good
reason has an extra special appeal to us, extra special because, this formation has arrived in a wheat field no
more than a few hundred meters from our cottage, wow, what
a treat.
The night of the arrival of this gift myself and Frances were kept awake by a herd of cows that were going
nuts in the pasture directly opposite our home, this carried on for (approx) two hours, 11.30pm -- 1.30am. The whole herd
were making the most horrific noise, as if they were in a total
panic. In all my time living in this area I have never heard
livestock behave in such a bizarre way. This may or may not
be related to the arrival of the formation but it does seem to be
rather a coincidence that this very unusual behavior of the
cows should be followed by the discovery of a formation in
the field next to the pasture the following morning.
This small but beautiful formation, that can be clearly seen
from the Alton Barnes -- Devizes road is, at first glance rather
simplistic and unimpressive, however on my arrival in the
formation the whole picture changed from simple to very
impressive. Some of the features found within this formation
left all who visited in awe. The central downed circle (approx)
70ft diameter is quite incredible. All the wheat has been swept from
a point at the center top of the circle around the circle in two arcs that culminate at the bottom of the circle in what can only
be described as a wheat sheaf, this is an old
fashioned method of stacking straw to dry out for thatching
etc. It looks as if the whole floor of this circle is flowing into
this three foot high mass of bound and woven wheat. Also
rather interesting and quite odd is the fact that there are
several thin paths of wheat flowing under the main bulk of
downed crop in this area of the formation that remain
completely anomalous, as far as we could gather these paths
have no value as far as the construction of the formation is
concerned. Surrounding the central circle is an orbital ring
(approx) 3ft wide that has a very interesting satellite attached.
This comprises a circle of downed crop (approx) 14ft diameter with a standing center, with a difference. The center of this small
circle has an elegant little pentagram not much larger than a person with arms and legs outstretched. Once again this
feature has been built to perfection with all the standing edges
very sharp and well finished. As we walked around the
formation it was very apparent that the crop had been brushed
down quite gently, with every step taken one could feel the
wheat stalks breaking to the floor as soon as a small amount
of pressure was applied.
On the whole this is a formation of outstanding quality with a
number of unique and clever features, must be seen on the
ground to be fully appreciated.
To be updated a drawing.
