Ringed circle in barley, 30' with 4' ring, both anti-clockwise, stems bend flat to ground with no buckling or snaps (John Kasher, with whom I spoke, attempted to flatten barley nearby but could not do so in the same neat manner).
No tracks nor tramlines in field a few miles west of Butte. The formation was found at about 6.30 Monday morning by the farmer, Kelly Reiser, AS HE HARVESTED THE BARLEY. He skirted around the formation and contacted the county sheriff, Duane Pavel, who contacted NASA, CIA, etc., and obtained an aerial photo.
The farmer and sheriff are both reported to be very "cool," according to Kasher.
Sunday night (the night before the formation was discovered) there were independent sightings of anomalous lights. Both were 2-3 miles from the field. In one, 4 individuals on a golf course witnessed four odd lights which appeared only momentarily in the direction of the field, and which must have been well off the ground to have been seen from the location. Another sighting at the same time that night, and about a quarter of a mile away from the first group, a woman saw two bright lights over 2 dimmer lights and thought it must have been a semi bearing down on a car...same direction.
Very interesting the formation appeared just as the farmer was about to harvest! And the sightings are nice..
Kasher is the Nebraska State Director for MUFON; this was his first circle investigation. He plans to draw up a report. Sheriff Pavel sent samples to Dr Levengood.
I am compelled to visit the site, but haven't made a firm decision. It will be a day's trip plus motel, probably, and numerous visitors have trampled the crop. I feel relieved that an aerial photo was obtained directly, but would still love to do my own research! Yet the timing... the timing is questionable.

Here's the scoop on the Nebraska event. It appeared in Butte, Nebraska late Sunday night the 21st of July and two local residents saw lights and heard strange sounds in the direction of the field. Next morn the farmer found it and called the FBI (too much X-files?). Our friend Dr. Jack Kasher of Univ. of Neb went out and took samples, photos. and magnetometer readings which showed elevated measurements. I have an aerial photo on its way and will JPEG you a copy over the net soon. The formation is in barley and looks very beautiful even from the newspaper clip I have (faxed to Ilyes and Peter Sorensen just today). It is a 35 ft ringed formation and the barley which is ready for harvest was reportedly not bent or broken and swirled quite flat to the ground. Butte is by the South Dakota border where the US Gov. is reportedly siting a nuclear waste dump. Lots of US formations seem to have this Nuclear correspondence. Keep up the good work!

Earlier this week (23July96) a farmer in Boyd County, Nebraska discovered a crop circle in his barley field. According to the story in the Omaha World-Herald, he had asked the local sheriff, and professors at UNL, the Smithsonian, and NASA officials for an explanation but none have been forthcoming.
Kelly Reiser -- the farmer-- claims that there were no tracks leading into or away from the circle, which is about 25 feet across. The stems had been laid down in a counter-clockwise pattern from the looks of the photo in the article. The farmer also claimed that although the barley is now dry enough to break if bent or stepped onto, none of the stems in the circle appeared broken.
