AUSTRIAN CROP CIRCLES 1996

Updated  Monday 2nd March 1998

FALNDORF, NIEDERÖSTERREICH - 20th JULY 1996

A flat elliptic circle in wheat (counter-clockwise floor pattern) about 20 meter in length and 15 meter broad. In the centre there is a kind of "nest". At the far ends of the flat area there are some standing crops, giving the whole the look of an "eye" (hard to describe). Surrounding this area in a distance of about 5-10 Meters is another circle (exactly following the elliptic area) with 6 "knots" or "satellites" in perfect symmetry - each a circle of about 1,5 to 2 meters diameter, counter-clockwise, with a small "nest" in the middle. There have been multiple reports of (swirling) lights and flying objects (even two days later). Nothing of it has been taken serious by either media or most of the public.

(There was another UFO incident two weeks before that, about 30-40 km away, which was "explained" as boy scouts with firecrackers, so maybe everybody was fed up with "Hoaxers". But a "fun" UFO-hotline of the Austrian Radio produces 100-200 calls a day (most of them serious) of concerned citizens, who report to have seen "something" in their lifetime.

On 20th July 1996 a pictogram was discovered in a field of wheat at Flandorf, near Vienna, in the Austrian federal state of Niederösterreich. A central circle was surrounded by an adjacent elliptic ring. These created two crescents on both sides of the central circle of standing crop which divided the central circle and the side segments of the ring. This design was again surrounded by a thin elliptic ring with six satellite circles on it.

The diameter of the elliptic ring was 20 x 15 m.
Each of the six circles showed a diameter of 1, 5 - 2 m.

Photo 4: The six satellite circles were laid down clockwise and in the middle of
each circle there was a bunch of standing crop.

Photo 5: In the middle of the central circle the wheat created a wreath-or nest-like structure, which was quite interesting because a similar structure was discovered in one of the best formations ever in England at Windmill Hill, Wiltshire in 1996.

After all I can not agree with some other and former reports, that described the pictogram as "...very precise and symmetric...".

We were reminded at last years pictogram ( 1995 ) at Ernstbrunn that showed a quite similar design and quality. But taking a look at both pictograms we can see that whoever made this pictograms there was no progress in creating elliptic elements.

THE CREATING TIME

The time in which the pictogram was created was an be fixed as about 7 hours and 45 minutes. This because the hunter Josef Bruny saw nothing in the field on 19th July 1996 at about 10.00pm and the next morning the hunter Rudolf Wiedermann discovered the pictogram at about 5.45am.

THE SIGHTINGS

Some people reported UFO-sightings in that area during the night before the pictogram was discovered. The UFO was described as an object about 30 m in diameter with white and red lights on its sides. The object was hovering up-down and sideways. but there was no direct connection between the UFO-sighting and the discovery of the pictogram. In early July 1996 another UFO-sighting was reported in local news and became very famous in the whole area.  Rudolf Slama reported to have witnessed a UFO landing in a wood. The day after, ground marks were discovered at the claimed UFO-site. After intensive
investigation by the police and the fire brigade it could be proved that Rudolf Slama had just seen a group of pathfinders playing with fireworks around a bonfire. The local people hoped to get o good UFO-tourism and started to sell with UFO-T-shirts an similar stuff. This story shows that the atmosphere was filled with a UFO-euphoria. Some people may suggest that this atmosphere brought the idea to create a new UFO-site - the pictogram that got local and national interest by the media.

A HOAX ?

Oliver Stummer of Z.E.U.S. ( Zentrale Erfassumg Ungewöhnlicher Sichtungen =  A Vienna-based project to collect and investigate anomalous and strange sightings and events ) said that the results of his investigations in this case shows that the pictogram was man-made/hoaxed by two people which were connected with the claimed hoaxers of the 1995-pictogram at Ernstbrunn. He said that these people showed two photos, one that shows just the empty field and the other one that shows the field with the created pictogram as the evidence for their claims. Is this a real evidence ?... Well the similarities between both pictograms are strong - no question.

Special thanks to Andre Eichner for his photos.
