Crop circles spotted on Minnesota farm

COTTAGE GROVE - A Minnesota farmer can't explain a strange phenomenon in one of this fields.

Gene Smallidge found five crop circles that were made sometime July 24 on his Cottage Grove farm. He said he made the discovery the following day, and did not find any evidence that this was a man-made prank.

"There's still grain in the heads," Smallidge said, referring to his flattened crop. "If that had been done by people using a board to drag across they would have pulled a lot of the grain out of the heads and off the stems and it's still there today."

As soon as word spread about Smallidge's discovery, a research company in Massachusetts came calling. Volunteers with BLT Research took samples and offered a scientific explanation for what happened.

"The main one they're looking at is possible plasma vortices that would be formed high in the atmosphere and create and have a different charge than the lower atmosphere," said volunteer Dean Deharpporte. "Somehow this plasma would be transported to the ground like lightning is."

Scientists say hot gasses could form a swirling pattern to create the circles without breaking the stems.

BLT Research Team Inc Update 15/07/2004

Hillsboro, Ohio
Date Found:  7/5/04
Date Occurred:  7/4/04 (most likely)
Crop:    Maize  (Sweet Corn)
Description:  Owners report to BLT that approx. 20'x30' of randomly-downed corn was discovered by them in a small garden.  Crop lay is primarily in one direction.  Local meteorologist states that, in his opinion, event not caused by weather damage, pesticide application, insect infestation, animal damage or mechanical flattening.  Owners report no EM effects noted the night prior to discovery (no TV interference, cell phone failure, flickering lights, unusual smells or sounds, failed batteries, and no animal disturbances).  Owners request that location be kept private.

Eagle Grove, Iowa

Found:  7/3/04 (first event)
Occurred:  7/2/04
Crop:  Oats
Description:   BLT fieldworkers inspected oat field 2 days later, finding multiple (approx. 18) irregularly-downed patches of flattened oats scattered across field.  No clear apical node-elongation visible, no expulsion cavities, no compass anomalies noted.  Crop in majority of patches is laid very flat to ground in a N-S direction; a few patches, also laid in only one direction, but E-W.  Owner reports that his dogs barked and were agitated during the night of July 2nd, when event occurred.  No other EM-type effects reported that first time.

A 2nd BLT fieldworker arrived a few days later to find that many more patches of crop had been flattened, with the owner stating that immediately after first field-team had left a large "X" of flattened crop had occurred, with additional damage occurring on several subsequent nights.  Owner now reported 2 dead tractor batteries (but states that one of them was low to begin with), and that both his pigs and his horse were acting strangely and appeared distressed.   Fieldworker found that the place where farmer reported finding the "X" was now obliterated with randomly-downed crop over entire area, again laid consistently in one direction only (no swirling or patterning in the lay).

Two days after the 2nd fieldworker visited the site the owner reported that his wife and step-daughter, who were watching TV at about 11:30 pm, suddenly noticed that the dogs were again barking loudly.  Upon looking out the window they observed what the step-daughter (age 13) reported as about a "soft-ball-sized" white light-ball hovering low over the field motionless for more than 2 hours.  No TV interference was observed but the phone and computer would not work.  Additionally, the BOL did not light up the crop beneath it, in spite of the fact that it was quite low over the field.  Because the owner was out of the house at his night job the wife and daughter were somewhat frightened and decided to go to sleep in the same bed until the owner returned.  When the owner did return at about 2:30 a.m. he drove right past this field and saw nothing, except that his horse had moved as far away from the oat field as the electric fence around his pen would allow.  The next day the phone and the computer worked properly.

BLT personnel are returning to the site to carry out additional field-work.

Litchfield, Minnesota
Date Found:   7/11/04
Date Occurred:  7/9-10/04  (?)
Crop:  Barley
Description:   BLT fieldworkers found, again, an extensive area of randomly-downed crop in numerous patches alongside the road.  One of the field-team, a meteorologist, reported that there had been heavy thunderstorms in the area during the time event is thought to have occurred and it was his basic impression that this downed crop was most likely caused by rain & wind damage.  However, he reports that the plants were bent at the base rather than broken, and that he did observe what looked like apical node elongation in the downed crop as opposed to the controls.  Crop was laid at various angles throughout, with abrupt boundaries between standing and downed crop.  No EM anomalies reported by owner.

New Milford, Connecticut
Date Found:  7/13/04
Date Occurred:  7/12/04
Crop:  Maize (sweet corn), approx. 5-1/2' tall
Description:  Owner reported to BLT that she found an approximately 20'x40' patch of absolutely flattened corn plants in the middle of her garden in the morning of the 13th July.  There is a 7' tall chicken-wire fence around the garden and there was no storm the night before (this fact verified by a local Connecticut meteorologist).  Plants are bent at their base generally, with some snapped 2" or so above the ground and are all lying very flat to the ground and in the same direction.  The overall area of flattened plants in very nearly square, with 5 rows of plants downed.  Owner noticed no EM effects the night before.

It is of particular interest that the flattened plants to do begin at the EDGE of the garden, but instead have an edge of standing plants along 3 sides (with a large woodpile bordering the 4th side).  She reports that a tarp which is covering the woodpile has been raised straight up about 1 ft., suggesting to her that whatever energy came straight down into the corn patch pulled up the tarp as it exited.

Chippewa County spirals lead examiners in circles

Tips and story suggestions arrive in our newsroom every day. Rarely, however, does the phone ring with a report of possible otherworldly phenomena.

That’s what happened Monday when paranormal investigator Chad Lewis called to say he was examining crop circles in a Chippewa County field.

I knew it wasn’t a crank call. Lewis, of Eau Claire, has a local (and even national) reputation for investigating ghosts, UFOs and other paranormal goings-on. He holds a master’s degree in applied psychology, has written two books on the paranormal and is finishing a third, hosts a periodic program on Community Television and co-hosts a two-hour talk show called “The Unexplained” on low-powered radio station Wolf 108 (WLFK-LP 107.9) in Eau Claire. (The show runs from 10 p.m. to midnight Mondays.)

My job usually involves mundane mysteries — Who will win the election? Will the Legislature pass the bill? — so I couldn’t resist the chance to see something that might be, if you’ll pardon the corny expression, out of this world.

Circles called ‘clumsy’

I found Lewis and fellow investigator Terry Fisk in the middle of a waist-high field of oats west of Chippewa Falls in the town of Tilden. They had spent more than four hours trudging around the hot, muggy field examining the flattened grain taking measurements. Some of the oats, crushed in spiral patterns around the circles’ centres, already had begun to spring back up, suggesting to Lewis the circle had been made days before.

Three circles were inscribed in the gently sloping field. The middle circle was 64 feet, 5 inches in diameter while those that flanked it were 53 feet, 8 inches and 55 feet in diameter, respectively. The circles were linked by two 5-foot-wide paths about 30 feet in length.

Lewis had been tipped off to the circles by an e-mail from a Chippewa Falls teen who said he noticed the circles as he drove by but claimed he hadn’t walked out to take a closer look. This story sounded suspicious to me: I knew I was looking for crop circles, but I almost missed them. From the road I could only discern their faint edges, which didn’t look particularly circular. In addition, Lewis hasn’t been able to contact the tipster to verify his story.

Lewis also is sceptical. He figured there was a 50-50 chance the circles were a hoax.

“It’s very clumsy around the outside,” he said, indicating their ragged edges. “Most of the formations that are in geometric shapes are clean.”

Lewis was intrigued, however, by the damage to the plants. Usually, plants in crop circles are bent — not broken — close to the ground, he explained. Here, the oats were violently broken 6 or 7 inches above the root.

“It looks like something really tore these up,” he said.

He’s also curious how potential hoax He’s also curious how potential hoaxers got into and out of the field without leaving marks. Another investigator, who visited before Lewis, said there was no path through the grain leading to the circles.

Lewis and Fisk scanned the area with a Geiger counter, which measures radioactivity, and a TriField meter, which measures magnetic, electrical and radio activity. They also took samples of damaged and undamaged plants, which will be sent to a lab.

Skeptics say crop circles, which have appeared around the globe since the 1970s, are the work of hoaxers working with ropes and boards. Others claim they are created by UFOs, unexplained electrical activity or government conspiracies.

In his research, Lewis tries to strike a balance between the cynics who laugh off all paranormal claims and gullible folks who believe everything they see and hear.

“My first reaction is let’s rule out the possibility of a hoax,” he said.

“As Terry likes to say,” Lewis added, “we like to keep an open mind, but not so open that our brains fall out.”

Still, Lewis admits he was excited to find crop circles so close to home. While they’ve appeared elsewhere in Wisconsin — including Mayville, Port Washington and Wausau — never before has Lewis seen them in the Chippewa Valley.

The farmers who own the land, Francis and Shelley Swoboda, fall in the cynical category.

“It’s definitely not very paranormal,” said Shelley Swoboda, who examined the circles Monday evening.

The Swobodas figure the circles are the work of teen vandals with too much free time, like those who often leave messes in a nearby gravel pit. Mostly, they’re upset that some of their grain is ruined and worry next year’s crop might be crowded out by the weeds already creeping in.

That’s not to say they don’t have a sense of humour, which Francis Swoboda demonstrated when he called his insurance agent.

“He said, ‘Do we have any insurance on aliens?’ ” Shelley Swoboda recalled.

Paranormal investigators Chad Lewis and Terry Fisk of Eau Claire were contacted by May Chi-Hi graduate Adam Prince after he was driving by Swoboda's field and happened to see what looked like a crop circle.

"The formation consists of three circles linked together by an approximately 5-foot wide path. The middle circle is 65 feet in diameter, while the two smaller ones are each roughly 54 feet in diameter."

"To Lewis, who has seen several reputed crop circles in the Midwest, the Tilden circles seem a bit "rough around the edges" compared even to some he's seen. They also discovered that before the circles were made, a straight, eight-inch wide path was made through the centre of the area intended to be circles. This might be a possible way for circle makers to manoeuvre without having yet made the circles."

UPDATE 1

Think I've finally figured out the story....Solano County cc apparently DID exist, in wheat.....found by farmer around June 7th, then found by a croppie on June 17th.....not reported to any of the researchers until June 28th, AFTER IT HAD ALREADY BEEN CUT ON JUNE 19 or 20.

Location was field at junction of Cordelia Road and Hale Ranch Road, Solano County, CA

This formation occurred about 4 miles from Rockville Road, CA formation of 2003.

Sorry for confusion, but couldn't get details until tonight.....had a guy driving all over Solano County earlier this week and he could find absolutely nothing....and none of the newspapers, TV people or crop dusters, much less the farmers, seemed to know about it.

UPDATE 2

just wanted to let you know that the precise location of this year’s Solano County crop circle has been tracked down.  The farmer has already harvested it.  I’m not sure if any material was collected for research purposes.  The pilot that took the aerial photographs has also been tracked down.  An article will be run in tomorrow’s DAILY REPUBLIC written by reporter Warren Lutz.

Here’s the web URL for the DAILY REPUBLIC http://www.dailyrepublic.com/ , if you’re interested.

UPDATE 3

Researchers retrace recent crop circle

By Warren Lutz

FAIRFIELD -- Paranormal researchers are playing catch-up to find out who or what made a crop circle in a farmer's wheat field last month.

The Cordelia-area formation area was already harvested by the farmer, who wishes to remain anonymous.

But local researcher Steve Moreno and other crop circle investigators hope to collect soil, seed and wheat samples to determine how it was made.

"It's been quite a road just to get to this point," said Moreno, founder of Fairfield-based Psi Applications. "I'm really just curious to find out more about this myself."

News of the formation surfaced Thursday when a picture taken by a Monterey artist appeared on a crop circle Web site. It is the fourth circle formation discovered in the area since June 28 last year, when a huge formation was found in a Rockville wheat farmer's field.

Tharee Davis, who visited the Rockville circles last year, was driving through the Cordelia area two weeks ago when she noticed patterns in another field, she said.

"The sun hit it in just a manner that created dark lines on the pattern," Davis said. "I had to pull over."

Davis belongs to a nonprofit group that is interested in crop formation.

"So I kind of have my ears up for (them)," she said.

According to early findings, the crop circles - 39 total - were made in three-foot high, mature wheat. The entire formation was 300 feet long with a main body surrounded by a 6-foot outline and a tail of 6-foot circles ending at two electrical towers.

This field was harvested June 20, eliminating any trace of the formation.

Moreno took a flight over the formation earlier this week and couldn't find it - nor did he see any other crop circles within a 6- to 7-mile radius.

Davis, who took a flight over the crop circles the day after seeing them and took pictures, promised the farmer not to publicize the discovery.

"Now that he's ploughed it over . . . I'm going let people know about it, because it's a shame not to let people see them."

An initial report on the crop circles can be found at http://psiapplications.com/Treepad/documents/223.html.

A new crop circle in Utah was reported this morning (June  29);  The BLT field-team reports the following info:

Location:    Spanish Fork, Utah
Date Found:   Sunday, June 27, 2004, by landowner's son
Crop:    Barley
Description:      A pictogram-style formation comprised of four variously-sized ringed circles, connected by pathways.  The NE ringed circle has 5 short pathways or "prongs" emanating from it.  Overall length approximately 200 ft.  Circles range in size from 11 ft - 31 ft and two are decidedly elliptical, with center swirls markedly off-center.  There are no tramlines in this field and the plants are seeded closely together, making it impossible for the fieldworkers to walk through the crop without leaving a trail.  Landowner's son reports no visible sign of entry (no damaged crop and no footprints in the damp soil) on Sunday morning;  it was his feeling that the formation had most likely occurred on the previous night, June 26th-27th.

No compass anomalies were noted.  Apical node-length changes are subtle and plant samples were obtained to evaluate this parameter.  No expulsion cavities were seen.  Magnet drag on one of the circles retrieved some magnetic material, but soil was quite damp and so surface soil samples were taken from the other 3 circles for evaluation in the lab.  The full protocol was carried out for the new BLT mycorrhizal fungi study, with surface and core soil samples obtained.

Landowner's son reported that his cell phone failed to work properly in, and near, the formation on Sunday. BLT fieldworkers reported that, while trying to photograph lay details on Tuesday, they had to replace 3 sets (4 batteries each time) of camera batteries.  A local witness has also reported unusual aerial light phenomena, but these details are not yet confirmed.

The landowner, Paul Prior, has posted the property with "NO TRESPASSING" signs and requests that the public not enter his field.  [We suggested, as we always do, that he consider mowing a pathway into the formation so that the public could view the cropcircle after paying a fee, but he declined this option.]

More details will be offered as soon as the fieldworkers have had time to organize their notes.  A brief report on this formation did appear in the Daily Herald newspaper (www.harktheherald.com) on June 29th and a photo is available in their Photo Gallery (it's photo #305).

Description:

Spanish Fork-AP) -- A large crop circle, surrounded by three smaller symbols of the same pattern, is startling motorists on Utah Highway 189 near Spanish Fork. The circle, etched into a wheat field near Salem, was first noticed Sunday morning.

SEDALIA, MISSOURI:   A 27'-diameter, 10-12" wide ring in a grass field, found June 15th.   BLT fieldworker JoAnne Scarpellini investigated on June 18th and reported that the grasses in the ring were greener than the rest of the field, but were not taller or shorter than the rest of the grasses, and were NOT flattened, instead having the clear appearance of a common "fairy ring."  Samples of the plants (and in particular the roots) were taken and were examined under the microscope for evidence of fungal spores.  A few very light coloured strands were observed, as well as what looked like fungi spots both at the surface of the soil and slightly sub-surface, but microscopic exam was not totally conclusive (perhaps due to heavy rainfall the night prior to the field visit).

BRANCHVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA:    Four flattened circles, two 20-25' in diameter, two 5-6' in diameter, in wheat, found June 11th.   No particular pattern was evident at ground level, and there were no connecting pathways.  No photos were taken and when field was re-visited a few days later crop had been harvested.

I witnessed crop circles in Eastern Tennessee recently, I measured them, took compass readings[they were normal], took 35mm photographs that are to be developed soon and  also took vegetation samples. My problem is that I can't find any one who will  analyze the vegetation sample. Do you have any suggestions as to whom I might send these samples? I am an Assistant State Director of MUFON Tennessee East. I am a Field Investigator and Research Specialist in Clinical Psychology in MUFON. Strangely, I seem to be getting no interest from MUFON HQ regarding the vegetation analysis. I'd much appreciate any assistance that you might provide regarding this matter.

Cordially yours,
