Yatesbury,
Nr Avebury, Wiltshire. 22/07/01
This formation was first discovered at (approx) 7:00 am on
Sunday morning by a well-known, pro circle hunter. A couple of hours later we were driving by and spotted the new arrival
from the A4, Beckhampton to Calne road, not far from the enchanted stones at Avebury Village.
After making our way down a heavily rutted track, which runs parallel to the field, we jumped out of the car and advanced
swiftly into the field and up the tramlines, with the usual mounting excitement as we went on our way, every time this
same early morning situation occurs we are feverishly hoping to be visiting a unique and original gift from the real circle
makers.
Being rather early in the morning we could be reasonably sure that no more than a handful of people would have visited
the formation before us, with this in mind we stepped into this
expansive multifaceted glyph.
The first thing we noted as we entered the formation, aside from the impressive scale of the thing, (approx) 280ft
Diameter, was how erratic the laid crop was in some parts of the pattern.
Large swathes of the downed wheat seemed to be put down in a rather haphazard and sloppy manner, whilst in other
places there was a good deal of rather neatly laid and coherent floor work, which included a few sunburst and swirl
elements within these rather more fluid areas. On the ground it appeared as if several different agencies were involved in
the creation of the overall formation. A considerable amount of mud was evident on the floor and some areas of the laid crop
had sustained violent damage, possibly due to earlier visitor activity or maybe from the actual process that was employed
in the creation of the formation.
At the center of the design a large hole in the soft soil was very apparent, the hole was (approx) one and a half inches
diameter and four inches deep. This hole was so apparent that it made us wonder if it was not a little too obvious. We have
quite often seen formations that have been tampered with in one-way or another by unknown circle wreckers in previous
years. It is at least a possibility that this is a case of such dawn tampering, who, what or why, we have no idea. In no other
parts of the glyph did we find such blatant and suggestive discrepancies.
Rather interesting to note the similarity of certain features within this new formation to a huge and unique glyph a few
fields away at Windmill Hill. This new arrival could be considered a sister event to the aforementioned. In some
ways this is rather odd, in our experience, when formations
are directly related to each other they usually have very similar construction and finish characteristics, not in this case.
These two designs have no similarity whatsoever in neither
quality of finish nor overall construction method. Nevertheless the relationship between the two is clearly apparent. How jolly
confusing!
This formation is, when viewed from an aerial perspective, very impressive with just a few small discrepancies, on the
ground, quite rough and very difficult to get a grip on the overall design as a coherent whole.
The farmer will not be happy to see you in his field.
Please respect his wishes and do not enter this formation.
