Code: SUSSEX 2005/03
Location: SOMPTING, NR WORTHING, WEST SUSSEX

Crop: Bearded Wheat
Design: 5-fold star
Dimensions: 135ft total diameter

REPORT: The second formation in the Sompting area was
discovered on Sunday 17th July. It lies in the same field as the
triangular formation of 2002, in which a fine white powder of unknown
origin was found, and the 'Kebab' pictogram of 1993.

The formation is about 135ft in diameter and is the
first manifest pentagram to have been found in Sussex to our
knowledge. The formation essentially consists of a ringed circle, with a
pentagram and pentagon set into the central disc, with five satellite
circles leading off the outer edge of the ring. The five satellite
circles coincide with the five tips of the internal pentagram and are
connected to the ring by a short 5ft path.

The formation is in bearded wheat and everything is
laid in a clockwise fashion, apart from the central flattened pentagon
which is laid anticlockwise. The pathways that lead from the ring into
the satellite circles are interesting in that they flow into the centre
of each circle and both overlay and are overlaid by the clockwise lay of
the circle, giving the impression that both came down at the same time.

The lay is neat and tidy, with very little signs of
damage. This is a simple formation, although it does show some
interesting geometrical properties, but as usual the idealisation cannot
be taken as evidence of original intent. However, the implicit square
depicts a diatonic ratio, a feature often exhibited in the early
formations of the 1980'. The pentagram appears to be orientated to the
north and set into a nice peaceful spot in the field.

An unusual design for Sussex, but a neat, simple formation.
