Code: SUSSEX 2004/07
Location: NEWMARKET HILL, WOODINGDEAN, NR BRIGHTON, EAST SUSSEX
First reported: 8 AUGUST 2004
Crop: Wheat
Design: 3D 'cube' of labyrinths
Dimensions: 214ft total diameter
Surveyed by: Allan Brown, Jordan Thomas & Andy Thomas
REPORT:
This new formation has arrived directly adjacent to
the now very-faded predecessor in the same field from a few weeks ago,
clearly visible to the east of the road from Falmer to Woodingdean. Similar
in diameter, this time it is a three-part standing labyrinth in a
circle, giving the impression of a 3D cube. The labyrinthine paths are
reminiscent of the eight-pointed star at the West Kennett Longbarrow
from this year.
The formation looks better from the air than it does
inside, the lay being rather haphazard in places. In general, the crop
is fairly damaged. Some of the 4ft paths which make up the labyrinths
are very messy indeed, to the point of becoming unrecognisable as paths
in places. The three main axis paths of the 'cube' are 6ft wide and
rather neater.
The outer edge of the formation has a 1ft wide
anticlockwise path in the lay running counter to the main clockwise
flow, while odd counter-direction tracer paths were detectable in other
places.
There has been a long break - almost a month -
between this and the previous most recent Sussex formation of this year
(at Sompting), which arrived 11th
July.
