Reconstruction of the 2004 Woodingdean formation | ||
1.
Draw a circle. Draw and extend the horizontal and vertical centerlines.
2.
Construct the circumscribed nonagon (regular 9-sided polygon) of circle 1, pointing down. (Note, that this can not be done by ruler-and-compass construction; the co-ordinates of the angular points have to be calculated). Number the angular points, starting at the upper right hand one, counterclockwise, as shown.
3.
Draw six of the nine rays of nonagon 2, from the center of circle 1 to the angular points nrs 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8.
4.
Draw three connecting lines, between angular points of nonagon 2 nrs 1 and 8, 2 and 4, and 5 and 7, respectively.
5.
Construct a circle centered at angular point nr 6 of nonagon 2, tangent to circle 1 at the lower side.
6.
Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to circle 5 at the lower side.
7.
Extend three rays 3, those to angular points 1, 4 and 7 of nonagon 2, up to circle 6.
8.
Copy circle 5 three times, to angular points 1, 4 and 7 of nonagon 2.
9.
Draw three lines, the first from the intersection of upper circle 8 and line 7 (at angular point nr 1), tangent to lower right circle 8 at the right hand side (at angular point nr 7). The other two in correspondence with the first, at angular points 7 and 4, and 4 and 1, respectively, as shown.
10.
Copy circle 5 four times, to the center of circle 1, and to angular points nrs 2, 5 and 8 of nonagon 2.
11.
Draw three lines, the first tangent to the central and upper circles 10 (at angular point nr 2), both at the left side, the other two in correspondence with the first, tangent to the central and the other circles 10 at angular points 5 and 8, respectively, as shown.
12.
Construct an equilateral triangle, by extending all three lines 4 in both directions until they intersect.
13.
Construct the circumscribed circle of triangle 12.
14.
Construct the inscribed hexagon (regular 6-sided polygon) of circle 13, pointing up.
15.
Construct the inscribed circle of hexagon 14.
16.
Copy circle 5 to the lower intersection of circle 15 and the vertical centerline.
17.
Construct a circle concentric to circle 1, tangent to circle 16 at the lower side.
18.
Nonagon 2, lines 3, 4, 9 and 11, and circles 6, 15 and 17 together make up all that is needed for the reconstruction.
19.
Leave out everything not present in the formation itself.
20.
Colour areas corresponding to standing...
21.
...or to flattened crop, to finish the reconstruction of the 2004 Woodingdean formation.
22.
The final result, matched with the aerial image.
