Hackpen 1999 in full bloom

July 4 2002, a major formation was discovered by a pilot out of Thruxton airfield, who quickly advised circles researchers that a huge and quite amazing formation was now on the deck next to the ancient Stonehenge monument.

The pilot who discovered this formation, whilst on a routine training flight, was reported to have said that the field that now houses the formation was empty the previous day, making it quite certain that this was a one night event.

As can be seen from the aerial images above, the new arrival spans 11 tramlines across the field, measuring in at an expansive 740 ft (approx).  Just a fraction smaller than the Milk Hill 409 event in 2001.  The formation can be seen to be an elaborated version of a 1999 circle event that had also appeared on the 4th July and at the time was considered to be a sophisticated and subjectively inspirational masterwork of stunning aesthetic appeal. Now the fully blossomed version has arrived at Stonehenge, why? Never before I feel, has the 3D aspect of the Crop Circle phenomenon been carried off with such grace and precision as it has here.

On the ground, all of the above applies to the same degree, however, only from this vantage does one truly realise the sheer magnitude of this formation, a formation which has now become a beautiful component within the wider mystery of the surrounding landscape, very much, I feel, as was intended.

We first entered the glyph on the morning of the 5 July at 6 am, practically one full day after the initial discovery. As we arrived at the scene, weather conditions were absolutely dismal as indeed they had been for the previous week or so.

A short walk from a nearby By-Way took us into the formation, which was invisible from any vantage point at zero elevation.  From the air, the formation is stunning.  From the ground, it’s dazzling.  Without actually standing in this circle one’s ability to comprehend the technical, logistical and aesthetic achievement would be severely compromised.  What can be perceived from this level is a network of paths, slender curves and exceptionally neat laid crop areas that scream of uncompromising precision. Even though the weather had been terrible for many days prior to the arrival of the formation, all the laid areas examined by myself and partner showed no signs of mud or obvious tramping /stomping marks at all, on the contrary, everything was very clean indeed. The whole thing had the look and feel of an event that was the result of a single action by a single agency, rather than any kind of team effort. Quite an enigma when one considers the fact that we were leaving very obvious mud and boot marks wherever we went within the smoothly laid areas.

If we had not seen an aerial photo prior to our visit, confusion would have been to the fore.  However, knowing what we were standing in, we quite quickly found the centre.  From this point the formation disappears in all directions for 370 ft. This formation has very serious vital stats.

The positioning of this glyph within the field appears to be an integral part of the formation itself. Referring back to the aerial image, three ancient ground-barrows (burial mounds?) can be seen almost touching three sides of the formation, clearly purposeful and a massive feat of engineering, alone worthy of considerable respect.

Obviously the geographical situation here is a key component in the placement of the formation, why not use a large open canvas, there are plenty in this area.  It seems as if the point is being made that the crop circles are indeed an integral part of this mysterious and provocative landscape.

With the manifestation of such events one can do nothing but wonder what this evocative land and the crop circle mystery will chuck at us next.
