Reported by Gordon Clark of
the Kent Dowser Group on the 27th June, a Kent formation in ripened
barley is to be seen clearly from the A28 (LHS as you travel eastwards
past High Halden towards Ashford). OS TQ906378

copyright 2002 Although the formation's a
fairly simple affair consisting of just 2 circles, both their floors
contained some interesting features. The larger circle (measuring 93
feet in diameter) contained some beautiful chevron feathering around
its perimeter, which was further enhanced by the soft barley seed heads.
Within its choppy floor, many of the laid seed heads were found to be
aligned with their stems, but with some plants interestingly adopting
a 'C' bend towards the top of the stem (see photo). There were also
several small raised pyramid-shaped nests, that we noted symmetrically
arranged within the floor lay.
The smaller circle (measuring
24 feet in diameter), which distanced itself by 41 feet from the
larger one, featured a figure of 8 centrepiece swirl.
Although it was reported on
the 27th June, a few locals claimed it had been there for over a
week. If that's the case, then its condition is remarkable for a
formation considered that old! Evidence did suggest though that it
hadn't received many visitors, if indeed at all!
