Image © Graham Tucker 2001 Kent's 4th formation is a beautifully etched figure of 8 lying on a gentle hill-side, close to the village of Shoreham. It's around a mile or so from Lullingstone Castle, and only a stone's throw from a hill-side cross, which was cut into the chalk as a local memorial to those lost during the First World War. This is the second occasion that one has appeared close to a chalk cross (Lenham, near Maidstone, Kent, on the same date in August, would you believe - Aug. 19th 1999!).
Diagram © Graham Tucker 2001 The lay is extremely complicated. A sense of water running over rocks, wouldn't be a bad description of it, because it simply flows. The way it intricately fans and feathers out is certainly state of the art, and we have a couple of exquisite sculptured nests that have been thrown in for good measure.
