Approximate diagram by Andy Thomas

While driving east on the A27 past the Coldean area of Brighton on 16th July, I spotted a small  pictogram on hills to the south and went to investigate the next day.

The formation lies in a barley field just south of the Moulescoomb housing estate on the eastern side of Brighton.  The barley is very low in height, about 1' only.  The pattern is essentially a 21' circle with a 71' rectangular pathway (4' wide) emanating from its south side.  There is a very small 3' vague appendage jutting east from the end of the path.

There have been a number of scrappy designs found in this field in summers past.  This year's effort is extraordinary for one reason, though - aside from being slightly neater than previous efforts, ALL THE CROP HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE GROUND AND PLACED IN A PILE!

There are almost no stems left in the soil and there is no discernible swirl - instead, there is a large mound in the circle comprised of bunched stalks with soil around their roots, heaped up.  There is a much smaller pile near the southern end of the pathway.

If this is some kind of prank by youths from the local estate, it's a very odd one.  The  formation, if it can be called that, has clearly defined edges, and some work must have gone into removing the stems and piling them up.  Was it originally a standard pictogram with laid crop that was then pulled up as a way of destroying it?  Is it some kind of agricultural experiment?  Or something else altogether?

One for the oddity file.
