The formation is situated on the east side of Bury Hill, close to the highest point of the hill, near to the busy A29, just north of the Whiteways Lodge roundabout. The South Downs way runs along the edge of the field to the north of the formation, which is positioned on a south facing slope. It is best seen from the A29 driving north.

The pattern appears to consist of an outer elliptical shape with 4 large circles and 3 smaller ones. In the middle there are some crescent or petal-like features. There is a tree in the field close to the formation and I saw lots of birds flying from the tree in and out of the formation. Through binoculars the lay of the crop looked very neat. I did not attempt to gain access into the field. Half the field has already been cut so the formation may not be there for much longer.

Funnily enough my dad and I were driving along the B2139 through Houghton on the morning of Thursday 2nd August on our way to the Glastonbury Symposium and we remember commenting that the fields up on Bury Hill (exactly where this formation has appeared) would make a good location for a crop circle. We also joked that something was bound to appear in Sussex whilst we were away!

BURY HILL, BURY, WEST SUSSEX:  REPORTED 5TH AUGUST 2001

ADDENDUM REPORT

Updated report by ANDY THOMAS of Southern Circular Research, 8th August.

The new formation here is in a wheat field adjacent to the A29 road and is fully visible when looking east just past the top of Bury Hill itself.

It is an arrangement of seven circles superimposed on a 3' wide ring orbiting tightly around a central circle with three internal standing triangles, like a radiation symbol.  The outer circles  alternate large/small, with one exception to the south, where there are two larger circles together.  The small circles average 17' diameter, while the larger ones average 30', with just one slightly larger at 35'.  The overall diameter of the formation is 105'.  All circles and the ring are laid anticlockwise, with the exception of one of the small circles, which is clockwise.

The lay is neat, if unremarkable, and the ring passes through the centre of each of the outer circles, which flow from it without centres.  The crop in the 'radiation symbol' is laid inwards so that three flows meet at the very centre of the formation.  This feature of the design is very similar to a pattern which appeared last year at Sompting.

We hope that aerial shots will be obtained in the next few days.

An approximate diagram (in Microsoft Word) is attached with this report and is simply a basic idea of the design.  Note that the base and sides of each central triangle are actually curved in the real formation.

Report by ANDY THOMAS of Southern Circular Research, 1st August.

A new formation has been reported in this area, between Arundel and Pulborough, and has been described as seven circles in some kind of crescent configuration.

No further details are known and we are investigating further.  Fields around the pattern were being harvested at the weekend, however, so time may be short.

There have been a number of formations in this general area in years past at Amberley and Warningcamp Hill.
