The Uffington formation as seen from atop Dragon Hill on July 24th -- although it looked to be a few days old. The 4,000 year old Uffington
White Horse (or is it a dragon?) also looks down on the formation from a bit farther away. This picture is a pan composed of six video frames.

FIELD REPORT

Description and Information:
Crop:Wheat

A major event of "Wiltshire quality" -this "thought bubble" type formation appeared on the north side of the White Horse below Dragon Hill and was the 4th event in this area within 10 years, but by far the most impressive. (Previous formation was in 1997, a dubious "smiley face" slightly to the west). Crop was wheat about a month from harvest and situated on level ground. The design was a large floral type head of approximate diameter 150ft, and 8 diminishing sized circles and one larger tail circle surrounded by a thin ring. All circles were just touching. Approximate diameters were 70ft, 46ft, 28ft, 18ft, 14ft, lift, 10ft, 10ft, 32ft. The circles were on a curving axis over 4-5 tramlines width. The full straightened length is estimated at 350-400 ft. ( A more detailed survey was not achieved as the farmer latterly barbwire the field entrances due to the large numbers of visitors ). This formation was well photographed and reported in Oxford local papers and even included in the Daily Mail gallery of the "Tops of the Crops" at the end of the season. The usual debunking resulted, but on the plus side, the landlady of the local pub reported record business! SU 302 874.

The White Horse at Uffington (or possibly dragon?) has been grazing out onto its plains for over two thousand years. Its dramatic slopes is a fitting location for the Circlemakers, and indeed the location itself has been a backdrop to a few designs since the mid nineties.

The year two thousand will be remembered at Uffington, for the best formation to appear in its wake. It is regarded as a Dragon, which is the Chinese year of the dragon, but of course it may have a more local significance with the White Horse.

We arrived at this location, late on a weekday evening, after an exhausting afternoon in the Avebury area. The formation itself is positioned almost in the alignment with Dragon’s Hill, a small lower mound, directly below the white horse. The very large dragon’s head, on the top of the tail, is slightly offset from Dragon’s hill. Its tail, has similarities to the 1994 "thought bubble" designs, which is always a welcomed sight, and once again reminded me of another wonderful crop circle season.

There is certainly an atmosphere about this location, which I can’t exactly explain, but I am sure, it has something to do with the Uffington Hillside, and Dragon’s Hill. It is a known ley line centre, with a famous line, running through the hill itself, which cuts through the formation. This could be causing the atmosphere, which is very noticeable within the design, more so within the head pattern. This larger head circle, placed on the tail is a series of flower patterns, rotated at certain intervals, to create almost a kaleidoscope effect.

The tail includes eight circles, of diminishing dimensions, but excluding the end ringed circle, which increases in size. The floor construction was extremely impressive, and very flat in appearance. The field is also very flat, with a wonderful backdrop of the white horse. Please try and visit this location, if only from the hillside, as it is one of the most dramatic of sceneries you will experience as a crop circle location.

Reconstruction of the
2000 Uffington White Horse formation (largest circle only)

By Zef Damen

There's a new crop formation right below the Uffington White Horse.  It's in a wheat field just to the north of the B4507 near Woolstone. Looks like it appeared during the night of 21/22 Jul. I only left it an hour ago around 9.30pm. It's about 200 metres long, complex - like you can't get a complete handle on what it is from the ground - and tails off into a beautifully executed string of circles which are alternately clockwise and counterclockwise. Can't wait to see an aerial photo.
