We have discussed many times the importance of the locations of formations, in the same fashion as the design itself. You know from previous reports, that the position in the landscape on many formations this year has been carefully orchestrated, to produce the maximum effect from the onlooker. Well this wonderful formation at Giants Grave, is no exception, as you view it either from the top of the Grave, or from the small track way leading to the field itself. From both positions, it’s a very impressive design, and truly fitting for the tranquilly that greeted myself on a Saturday morning.

‘It is a fantastic location for a formation, which has an atmosphere that you could almost touch’!

Giant’s Grave is part of an ancient settlement that runs from Martinsell Hill, to this rather unusual Triangulation point overlooking the small village of Oare. It is a fantastic location for a formation, which has an atmosphere that you could almost touch! A power and presence as I call it, but in a very subtle way, because it is very Calm on the senses. There was hardly any wind on the day I visited, and everything was completely still. Once again you are experiencing part of the countryside, which has almost stayed the same way as the ancients knew it!

Entering the formation, I immediately noticed the quality of the floor construction, this is a very impressive formation, and

has four rings, which when intersected, produce the inner detailing of the design.  But once again, the geometry is by no means perfect. On the northern outer ring section, (facing towards Giant’s Grave) a slight anomaly has appeared, as the ring inside the outer section, has cut through part of the design, which are present on the other two easterly and westerly rings. The central larger ring is also irregular viewed from the aerial shots. This is probably caused by the slight incline of the field, as the formation is placed at the very top, just below the strip lynchets. (Which are also ancient ramparts).

Each outer rings intersecting the larger central design, were flowing in a clockwise rotation. The small central ring was also clockwise, as was the central circle inside, and the other rings surrounding the central portion.

Overall, I was very encourage by what I saw at Giants’ Grave, and indeed it was a nice change to experience a large formation in one of the most peaceful parts of the Wiltshire landscape.
