FORMATION MIMICS RADIO TELESCOPE! The Crop Circle Connector team once again revisited a formation near the radio telescope, which dominates the open landscape at Chilbolton, but its remote position proved troublesome! One of the joys of Crop Circling is visiting wonderful villages like this one at Chilbolton. Quite a large place, with a mixture of old and new properties, and a charming river flowing through the heart of the Village, it is an example of how idyllic, the county of Hampshire can be! Probably the most unusual landmark in Chilbolton, is its own Radio Telescope, which is situated on the flat plains of fields on the outskirts of the village. It is government owed, so is naturally sectioned off from the public, sat in its own compound, and with high bared wired fencing. It’s quite a place to be, with this dish domineering the skyline, and is quite fitting for a location for a crop circle. The Radio Telescope has been hit once before, as only last year (1999) we witnessed a formation, within a few hundred yards of the dish, a series of circles within a trapezoid shape. Click on Thumbnail to enlarge It took us two attempts to reach this latest shape. Our first attempt was to walk across the open cut fields towards the dish, but we soon realized we were the wrong side! It would have meant climbing over five different fences to reach the formation from our position, but which would have resulted in some colorful vocabulary negotiating the barbed wire. So, we decided to return to the car, and find an alternative route around the back. This took us through a housing estate, with a footpath, which eventually led directly to the dish. But what was

‘The design is simply enormous, but from the air, you can quite
clearly see that the Circlemakers have incorporated the dish into the
design’ The formation is located directly in the opposite field to the Radio
Telescope, it is quite an eerie feeling to be standing in this huge
formation, with the dish always in the corner of your eye. It probably would
have been even more spooky if the dish was pointing towards us. Thankfully
it wasn’t as you do tend to get the feeling your being watched in this
location.
Click on thumbnails to enlarge The design is simply enormous, but from the air, you can quite clearly
see that the Circlemakers have incorporated the dish into the design. Its
almost like a mirror image, but has similarities to the designs that
appeared last year in Hampshire. There seems to be a theme still in
progression from the designs that appeared not far from this location in
1999. It had a very different feel to the Wiltshire formations, and we
were very lucky to find it in extremely good condition. Its remote
location, has stopped people visiting it, so many of the smaller circles
still had their curtain of crop intact from one circle to another.
Click on thumbnails to enlarge The whole formation covered a very wide stretch of crop, probably one of the largest in square feet this year! The floor pattern was extremely neat. Very nice sections of crop, like
running water, flowing from the dish shape design into the head circles.
The whole formation covered a very wide stretch of crop, probably one of
the largest in square feet this year! The Circlemakers must have intended
for the design to mimic the telescope, probably trying to tell us this
form of data, is important in some way? Who knows, but it was well worth
the visit! Report and images by Stuart Dike Copyright 2000 |
