Reconstruction of the 2000 Bringhurst formation | ||
| 1. | ![]() |
Draw a circle. |
| 2. | ![]() |
Draw six centerlines, evenly spaced at 30°. |
| 3. | ![]() |
Draw the diagonals (chords) closest to the centerlines. |
| 4. | ![]() |
Copy the circle of step 1 two times with their centers at the intersections as shown. |
| 5. | ![]() |
Copy the same circle one more time with its center at the intersection of the previous circles; it therefore passes through the intersections mentioned in the previous step. |
| 6. | ![]() |
Draw another circle, concentric to the previous one, passing through the intersection of two diagonals as shown. |
| 7. | ![]() |
Construct the circle of step 5 another 11 times (12 in total) regularly around the central circle. |
| 8. | ![]() |
Repeat this for the circle of step 6. |
| 9. | ![]() |
Turning back to the figure of step 3, construct a circle touching (tangent) to the diagonals. |
| 10. | ![]() |
Draw all centerlines equally spaced between the other set of centerlines (of step 2). |
| 11. | ![]() |
Copy the circle of step 9 with its center to the intersection of a newly drawn centerline and the circle of step 1. |
| 12. | ![]() |
Repeat this another 11 times (12 in total) for all other newly drawn centerlines. |
| 13. | ![]() |
Construct a circle passing through end-points of centerlines spaced at 120° and touching the small circle of step 9 (at the far side). |
| 14. | ![]() |
Construct a circle concentric with the one of step 1, touching the previous circle at the outer side. This circle forms the outer border of the formation's pattern. |
| 15. | ![]() |
Collecting everything introduced in steps 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 14 provides all necessary ingredients. |
| 16. | ![]() |
Removing all superfluous parts finishes the reconstruction of the 2000 Bringhurst formation. |
| 17. | ![]() |
The final result, matched with the aerial image. It fits fairly well, but not accurately at some places. |
