Chaffeymoor,  nr Wincanton, Somerset. Reported 23rd July.

GPS Reference

 Updated  Wednesday 2nd July 2000

On driving down to Devon for a camping trip on 23rd July, we couldn't miss seeing a simple circle adjacent to the A303 at Chaffeymoor near Wincanton (Somerset).

The crop is wheat.  The diameter measures 49 feet from 2 different lines taken straight across the centre.  The swirl is clockwise.  The centre was quite impressive, showing layering. The edges are not precise - I imagined it might have the appearance of a cogwheel from the air.  There was no evidence of crushed/broken stalks.

Attached are JPGs scanned from the few exposures we had left on the way back on 28th July.  One image is from the roadside, a second is of the circle centre.  (I have scanned each at 50%, 100% and 160% of the original image size.)

I took some crop samples from the centre of the formation and also some control samples from about 20 metres away from it.  On close examination you can see the usual enlarged nodes in the formation samples, some with expulsion cavities, compared to the controls.  I have attached some images of these also.

On the way back from our camping trip, we saw a second formation from the A303 at Holton near Wincanton (Somerset), which is a few miles west of the Chaffeymoor formation.  This was much further away from the road, I guess 300 - 400 metres.  Again it was a simple circle probably a bit larger than at Chaffeymoor.  Unfortunately, my little camera was not man enough for the distance.

Please feel free to use these images on your site if you feel they are important enough.
