Located high on the slopes of
Woodborough Hill, this curious but irregular shape must have appeared in the early hours
of Friday 30th April in Oil Seed Rape.
This part of Woodborough Hill looks away from Adam's Grave and East Field, which makes it
a rather idyllic and remote part of the Wiltshire landscape. It took a twenty minute walk
to actually visit the formation, as its location is on the back of Polly Carson's land.
The shape itself is at this moment unidentified, but the overall construction of the
formation was a disappointment. Fortunately the Newton St Loe formation gave us a good
example to cross reference future Oil Seed Rape designs, but I am afraid the Woodborough
Hill formation didn't impress, and this was shared by other people at that time.
As I have stated in the past, the phenomenon can produce a certain amount of breakage
within a design, but inside the formation there were countless broken stems, with severe
scraping and bruising along the plant themselves.
Some of the plants were completely snapped off, and left laying on the top layer. Each
sections of the shape had two directional flows, but where the flow changed direction,
more breakage was visible.
We are certainly curious about the design itself, as it seems to have a medieval tone,
possibly an unusual Maltese Cross, or perhaps represents part of an ancient Sanskrit?
