NEW SUSSEX FORMATION - Ref: SX 1999/06

Found at: Poynings, Nr Henfield, West Sussex

Date: 1st August 1999

Description: Dumbbell comprising two circles inside a thin ring connected by a short path to a thicker ring with a rectangular bulge. Three grapeshot in a line and a squat triangle lie nearby.

Crop: Wheat

Surveyed by: Andy Thomas

Report: First spotted Sunday 1st August, this elaborate dumbbell lies at the foot of the South Downs near Devil's Dyke, a famous Sussex rift valley. A good view can be had from the South Downs Way footpath which runs near the pub and car park at Devil's Dyke, looking north.

Two anticlockwise 40' circles sit closely together within a 110' by 3' wide anticlockwise ring. A short path then emanates to a smaller but much thicker ring of 62' by 14' with an attached 26' by 7' rectangular bulge. The overall length of the dumbbell is 181'. 29' from the main ring, three small grapeshot of around 7'-9', two anticlockwise and one clockwise, lie next to a small triangle of around 13' each side.

The lay in the main circles is neat with pleasing swirls, though the thick ring is more haphazard.

This same field played host to a simpler dumbbell in 1991. This new formation is closer to the southern edge of the field, however.
