This wonderful formation, situated on the western side of Barbury Castle, is quite frankly positioned in one of the most picturesque places I have had the pleasure to visit. It was quite breathtaking to view the formation from the top of Barbury Castle, a Neolithic Hill Fort, and one of the best Rampart forts you will visit in Wiltshire.

The formation itself spanned across six tramlines, which approximately makes its diameter to be around 300 feet. The design is made of a huge circle, with an inner ring only about a 2ft in thickness, with a wonderful pattern placed in the centre of three interlocking crescents. The shape is very similar to Hackpen Hill, and what some are calling the Celtic Knot, but these are normal crescents with just one centre involved in their construction.

The outer edge of the formation had a clockwise rotation, but the floor construction was out of the world. No channels could be seen this formation, as the lay was complete smooth, with just one continuous flow. The internal design had a pathway running around each of the crescents, which ran in beautifully with the outer flow, which was again clockwise in rotation. On the outside of each crescent placed at a central point to the crescents, were three triangular sections, which are actually the tips of the three crescents, as they overlap each other. Flow channels could just be detected on the outside of the crescents, but not as pronounced as the channels on the Devil’s Den formation. Overall the floor construction is one of the best examples in the Avebury area at present, a truly outstanding formation, in a wonderful serene location.

Video shot by Donald Fletcher of Manor Park, London, in the Afternoon of 7th August 1999, showing a white object flying into and out of the formation below Barbury Castle. A second similar object is briefly glimpsed near the end of the video.

We hope to bring you more information once we have been able to speak to the cameraman.
