STINGRAY

Similar to this year's "Dragon Larva" series, in both design and construction, this awesome creature is something else again!  It arrived on the A361, half a kilometre past the Beckhampton roundabout, in wheat, July 21st.
The body is some 200  feet wide, and the tail, which consists of 52 circles in all, must be over 300 feet if straightened.  The shaded area represents crop laid counter to the surrounding crop.

A lot of controversy is still surrounding this enormous formation, just outside of Beckhampton. The night of its creation is still unconfirmed, was it the Tuesday the 21st or Wednesday the 22nd, people are still uncertain. Also there are stories that this formation was connected with the BBC for their Country file documentary. On the events that have taken place on the 25-26th July, it would seem unlikely that they would have commissioned three formations by the same individuals, because the difference in quality between the Beckhampton formation, and the designs they created for the programme are clearly marked.

This huge design was created on relatively flat piece of land on Firs Farm. Its positioning within the field, was just off from an unmarked Roman Road, which follows a path towards Silbury Hill, and we also have a confirmed Ley Line which intersects the main head design, running from the Long Stones, and a grouping of Tumuli's on the nearby Hill. A report was made from a couple that were walking along the Calne road on the night in question, and noticed many Military Helicopters in the Beckhampton area, with unusual flashes of lights in the sky.

The formation itself was extremely impressive, not only for its shear size, but the floor construction was so intricate, the trying to capture every directional flow produced a headache. I don't think I have seen so many different flows in one formation, which made up the main head section. The tail itself consisted on 51 circles in total, and was over 200ft in length which ended with a cluster of eight circles, and then diminishing into smaller circles at the very end.

Many of the "Tail" circles featured a tuft of standing crop, no more than 10 stalks in some of them. The flattened crop was lying at 45 degrees against the standing walls, and originally there would have been a curtain of standing crop separating each one. On our arrival, this feature had almost disappeared, due to people walking down the tail.

Returning to the head section, the design itself is made of arcs and crescents, creating a flower pattern, but the floor construction was absolutely fascinating. The lay of the crop close to the entrance of the "Tail" featured some wonderful step multilayering, which was handed both sides, running in unison with the flow of the crop. At certain points around the head design, there were outline pathways, especially around the middle circular section, but the change in direction of the crop was quite dramatic when the crop flowed into the crescent feature. as it started to flow in a different direction, only a foot of so across. An extremely complex lay, and one which would seem to be very hard to produce, but at the same time, flattened the crop hard to the ground, with very little breakage.

A number of standing stems were present with the head design, but something even more unusual was found of them. On the actual seed heads, we found a number of dead flies which were stuck to the seeds, not only by themselves, but also caught up within a very fine web. Not only that, but if you looked even more closely, smaller creatures (not flies) were found dead further inside the seed cavity. A number of flies would just crumble away in your hand, on the lightest of touches, as if they had been baked. The standing unaffected crop around the formation was complete avoid of any dead Flies on their seed heads, if there were flies they were still alive, and would just fly off. The same applied for the standing crop inside the formation, it was just the effected standing stems around the flattened crop. We have been informed that some of these flies have been taken away for analysis, because this was not the first time we had seen this, as the Cherhill circles also had this anomaly. Is this a connection to the force use to create these designs, I do hope so. All we can do is to wait and see, and also monitor if this occurs again this year?
