CROP CIRCLES OF 1996

East Field, Alton Barnes, Nr Avebury, Wiltshire. Formed 17th June

DOUBLE HELIX

This spectacular formation arrived 17th June in the famous East Field at Alton Barnes (SU 115-625), pointing at Adam's Grave to the North and Woodborough Hill to the South. It Measures 648 feet long, and consists of 89 circles forming twin strands of "thought bubbles" (77 total) spiraling around a central backbone of 12 large circles in a line.

Everyone who sees it agrees that the design represents DNA.

NOTE, where the double helix strands cross over each other in 3-D the near strand would hide one of the circles on the far strand. Hence, we could surmise that there are ten circles in each of the eight loops - except that one of the loops has eleven (indicated by the pointing hand)! Thus, if we count "hidden" circles and that extra one, there is a de facto total of 93.

My diagram is fairly accurate - the left side of the helix does curve out slightly farther than the right side does. And I have exercised some care to show how the strands overlap. However, like all my diagrams, it is made with reference to aerial video, without access to survey measurements, so it isn't precise enough for one to perform geometric analysis. This does look like it appears from the air. UPDATE

In 1991 there was a formation at Froxfield (Often called "The Brain") that many say represented chromosomes. Of course, these are composed of DNA.

A team of hoaxers was repulsed from the field at 2 AM on June 20th, and two days later a rough circle with loops, very incompatible aesthetically, appeared next to the formation .
