Sets of two circles like these were common place in the early days of the crop circle phenomenon. During the 1986 period Andrews stated for the first time on a BBC TV interview, that most of the formations were positioning themselves on ground contours in an intelligent manner. This got him to hot water with some of his colleagues and some media who thought he was suggesting they were being created by ET’s and UFO’s. As he has explained many times, that was not so. He had observed that often the axis connecting crop circles like these two, was also the axis or boundary formed by a change in colour of the vegetation or some other alignment like tractor tyre marks. The centre of the circles or in some cases the circumference would be attached to one of these visible ground contours. In this case at Heytesbury, Wiltshire, both applied. They appeared during the night of 15-16th July, 1988 on Military land in the Salisbury Plain exercise area.
